[I]Garden Tokens - USA [message #251077] Fr, 07 April 2006 21:34

My wife wants to send a plant, or the moral equivalent, to a friend in
the USA. Most Garden Centres in the UK offer a token scheme, whereby you
can buy vouchers valid in a large number of such centers across the
country, which are therefore suitable for this sort of purpose. I would
have thought that US Garden Centres (or equivalent) would not miss out
on such a lucrative scheme. But she has been unable to find any on line.

Do any USA-nians know of any such scheme, for which the vouchers can be
bought on line? I suppose it may be that the US is too big for a
nationwide vouvher scheme: I think the intended recipient is Southern-
ish.

Token scheme?...a cunning plan to pull the wool over somebody's eyes,
but it's the only plan of the sort we got, and we're just going through
the motions because we've been told we had to?

Oh. Gift cards. Ya, we got them:
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=giftCard&view=home for instance.

There's a Lowe's or Home Depot in almost every city of relevance.

not sure if it's the same sort of deal, but there are several online flower
shops where you can purchase an arrangement to be sent anywhere in the US.
The online shop then contracts a local shop near the recipient to make and
deliver the arrangement. Not always entirely identical to the one you
thought you were ordering, but as close as they can come with whatever they
have in stock... www.1800flowers.com is one of the big ones and really
the only one i can think of off the top of my head...

Florist Transworld Delivery used to be the big network; one could
place an order with any FTD florist, and the one nearest the
destination would fill it and deliver it. They're still around, and
may still be your best bet:

I thing they mostly do cut flowers. This has to be a plant, an addition
to the garden, of a particular species that has come up in the
conversation. Nonetherless, I'll try them.

One international scheme which used to exist, perhaps still does, was
Interflora. It has a reputation of being more pricy than warranted, but
then, so do all alternatives I've heard about. A niggling thought in the
back of my mind tells me that they have another name, but I don't know
what.

They're trading under the Fleurop name in Germany and (IIRC) several
other European countries, if that's what you mean.

It probably is; that does ring a bell.

May I suggest an alternative? You might want to try a gardening
catalog that is available on-line and in print. Most of these will
ship anywhere in the U.S. Your Lady can buy a gift certificate and the
friend can pick out what she likes.

My favorites:

Seeds of Change catalog. Veggies, plants and seeds and tools, but few
ornamentals.

Harry & David's
http://www.harryanddavid.com/
gormet nibbles, gift plants, jams, etc.

or does she like Roses? http://www.jacksonandperkins.com
